Our vision of the future of mining

A loader in an underground mine

The future of mining is net zero, circular and regenerative – supporting the transition to a sustainable world.

The net zero mine of the future will be achieved through the electrification of equipment and the use of fossil-free energy. The resource-efficient mine will be highly productive and minimize waste – and, once mined, metals and minerals will enter a closed loop system, facilitated by new circular business models. The regenerative mine will bring mining underground wherever possible and create a net positive impact on biodiversity. It will reduce the use of water to a minimum.

It will be connected, providing real-time data and intelligence to enable optimization. And it will provide a safe working environment for a highly skilled workforce in thriving communities. We believe this future is necessary to ensure access to resources that enable the transition to a low-carbon and sustainable world.

Our role

We are taking steps to help create this mine of the future in collaboration with our customers, developing forward-thinking solutions with a focus on automation, electrification and digitalization. We are providing autonomous and connected solutions, often operated remotely. We design equipment which is built to last and are working to increase circularity through options to refurbish, remanufacture or recycle at end-of-life.

Through innovation and customer partnerships, we aim to optimize mining from planning to operation to restoration.

Three key areas

  • Net zero mine of the future

In the future, all products and operations in the mining sector are fossil fuel-free, including electric mining equipment powered by on-site renewables and designed for maximum energy efficiency. Mines are planned and designed to be fully automated and managed using real-time data to optimize operations.

  • Circular mine of the future

The mine of the future is resource-efficient. Extraction processes are optimized through highly productive and automated equipment and services, and waste is eliminated. Once mined, metals and minerals will enter a closed loop system, facilitated by new circular business models. The equipment is built to last using recycled materials wherever possible, and is designed for refurbishment, remanufacture or recycling.

  • Regenerative mine of the future

Mining of the future has a minimal impact on natural ecosystems. Suppliers and mining companies work together to have a net positive impact on biodiversity. There is minimum disturbance to the environment through solutions that enable underground mining as well as optimized surface drilling and tunnelling. The use of water is managed through a closed loop, improving access to clean water for local communities. Closing the circularity gap helps reduce reliance on finite natural resources and mines are managed at their end of life so that natural ecosystems can regenerate.
