PROCESS ENGINEER
ROLE SUMMARY:
A Sandvik Coromant Process Engineer plays a key role in improving the quality of delivered Insert cutting tools by coordinating machinery investments, implementing new production technologies, and supporting the achievement of key performance indicators within the Inserts Production Plant. As a Process Engineer supporting chemical vapor deposition (CVD) coating, responsibilities include developing and optimizing process formulations, as well as defining methods and controls that ensure compliance with quality standards. The role involves evaluating existing production processes and recommending improvements to working methods and operational procedures to reduce risk, cost, and waste while enhancing quality, productivity, and safety.
Additional responsibilities include recommending and implementing process improvements, modifications, or additions; reviewing process requirements for compatibility to determine cost and schedule impacts; and collecting and analyzing process data to drive continuous improvement initiatives. This position also contributes to Sustainability initiatives and Digital Transformation 4.0 by exploring, evaluating, and leading the implementation of new technologies that support engineering and production processes.
The Process Engineer will collaborate closely with the local Westminster team as well as global Insert Production and R&D teams. The role works in partnership with upstream and downstream operations, including the local process engineering team, to provide feedback and support strategic improvements. Through collaboration with suppliers, the engineer helps ensure the quality and availability of raw materials. By spending time on the shop floor and in laboratory environments, the engineer develops strong process knowledge and directly supports operators in areas such as 5S, continuous improvement, safety, and technical training. This position also serves as a contributing member and leader across safety, continuous improvement, HAZMAT, and cross-functional teams, while supporting capital projects focused on sustainability, strategic improvements, and ongoing development within the Inserts Plant and the Westminster site.
KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS:
- Lead and manage capital investment projects to maintain advanced production technologies and support new product development in collaboration with R&D and other Insert production units.
- Provide daily technical support to production teams, resolving issues related to equipment, processes, product performance, and quality.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives by participating in and leading projects that improve insert quality and increase productivity.
- Coordinate the closure of customer Corrective Action Requests by performing root cause analysis and implementing effective countermeasures to prevent recurrence.
- Collaborate with global production units, production technology centers, and local and international suppliers, including occasional business travel.
- Support the achievement of plant operational goals and individual performance objectives.
- Develop and maintain work instructions and take a leading role in technical training for production teams.
- Communicate and collaborate effectively within the process engineering team and with production departments.
- Ensure all processes comply with applicable standards, directives, and environmental, health, and safety regulations (governmental and Sandvik).
- Maintain compliance with site-certified ISO quality, safety, and environmental management systems.
- Promote and demonstrate strong safety leadership, including adherence to 5S principles, cleanliness, and workplace organization.
- Ensure machinery and equipment reliability and performance by working closely with Maintenance and vendors on preventive maintenance, improvements, and TPM initiatives.
- Reduce production costs through alternative sourcing, improved maintenance strategies, enhanced work methods, and increased process reliability.
- Support and motivate a high-performing production team through active involvement, leadership, and role modeling.
- Perform additional duties as required to support the overall success and advancement of the Inserts Plant, as assigned by management.
CANDIDATE’S PROFILE:
The Process Engineer is an organized, self-motivated professional and quick learner with an innovative mindset and strong teamwork skills. The ideal candidate can manage multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining a high level of quality and accountability.
A Bachelor of Science degree in a related field is required, with hands-on process engineering experience preferred.
ADDITIONAL SKILLS:
- Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Strong interpersonal skills with effective verbal and written communication abilities.
- Systematic and logical problem-solving approach, with the ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
- Highly accurate, consistent, organized, and detail-oriented in all work assignments.
- Experience with LEAN manufacturing techniques and continuous improvement principles is preferred.
- Positive attitude with a willingness to take on challenges and drive results.
- Flexibility to support multiple roles and assume additional responsibilities as business needs evolve.
- Strong commitment to fostering and supporting a proactive safety culture.
