Sandvik to close unit in Finland
Sandvik has decided to close the site in Turku, Finland and optimize the site in Tampere, Finland. This is in line with the previously communicated announcement on 26 March 2015 that consultations were going to be initiated.
The closure of the site in Turku is a part of the previously communicated supply chain optimization program.
The union consultations in Turku and Tampere were concluded Friday 5 June, 2015.
Sandvik will continue manufacturing of all products at other sites in Finland, China and USA.
Production at the Turku site is estimated to end Q2, 2016.
The reorganization that arises from the decision will affect all 460 employees at the site in Turku in some way. However, approximately 120 persons have been excluded from the consultation process: these jobs are related to frame manufacturing, outsourcing or other Mining/Group functions that are not part of the Turku manufacturing operations. 340 of the existing 460 jobs at the Turku site will continue to be affected by the closure. Transfer possibilities will be offered to approximately 140 persons currently holding those 340 jobs.
The optimization will not result in personnel reductions at the Tampere site as previously indicated.
The main activities performed by Sandvik in Turku are machining, assembly, welding, painting and testing of underground loaders and trucks. The main activities performed by Sandvik in Tampere are machining, assembly, painting and testing of surface and underground drill rigs.
