Sandvik Mining and Construction designated as preferred supplier for Rio Tinto's expansion of Pilbara iron ore capacity in Australia
Rio Tinto Iron Ore has confirmed to proceed with Sandvik Mining and Construction as the preferred supplier of mobile machines for the iron ore capacity expansion to 283 million tonnes per annum in the Pilbara region of Western Australia.
This capacity expansion project includes the delivery and commissioning of 9 Sandvik mobile machines before mid of 2013 at several port and mine sites in the Pilbara and several machines in the year thereafter.
As the largest mining project ever undertaken in Australia it confirms Rio Tinto's strength as Australia's leading long-term supplier of iron ore. Rio Tinto is a global leader in the exploration, mining and processing of minerals and metals, including aluminum, copper, diamonds, energy products, gold, industrial minerals and iron ore.
During the past 15 years of cooperation, Sandvik has successfully completed several Materials Handling projects by providing 32 mobile machines for Rio Tinto Iron Ore in Australia, including similar projects at Dampier and Cape Lambert in the Pilbara Region.
"This collaborative partnership confirms Sandvik's strong customer offering and demonstrates our capabilities of providing excellent technical solutions based on Sandvik's vast competence in designing materials handling equipment," says Harald Grosshammer, RPLM - Materials Handling Projects and Systems.
