Investigation of milling body angles on cutting forces, performance, wear and chip formation

Sandvik Coromant, Sweden, offers a thesis project in the area of metal cutting, to be carried out at Lund University of Technology and at Sandvik Coromant in Sandviken and Västberga, Stockholm.

Background and work description

Sandvik Coromant, a division within the Sandvik Group, is a world-leading manufacturer of cutting tools in cemented carbide for turning, milling, and drilling.

Changing the angles in milling like the milling body angle and the inclination angle in combination in face-milling , have showed that tools with larger inclination angle have different wear pattern as well as differences in cutting forces, the theory is that this is at least partly due to differences in functional cutting angles see picture below.

However, these differences are larger than initially expected, therefore it would be good to re-design the inserts so that only the inclination angle would change. Then milling tests will be performed using these inserts so that the resolution of the effect of the inclinations angle is isolated for increased understanding and much better resolution.

The project will start with a literature review. The student will do milling with different cutter angles and grades

Student background

We are primarily looking for someone studying mechanical engineering, materials science, physics, chemistry or similar. You must have a genuine interest in experimental work and have good writing skills. We put value in experience in independent experimental work.

As the work primarily will be carried out at Lund University of Technology, the applicant is assumed to have an accommodation in the Lund area arranged. Time will also be spent, primarily in the beginning of the project, at Sandvik Coromant in Sandviken and in Västberga, Stockholm.

Duration

The thesis project lasts 20 weeks, starting January 16, 2023.
