A truly goal-oriented team player

Whether at Sandvik, in sports, or at home with family and friends, it’s in Angelica Lorsell’s nature to care for others and be herself.

Angelica Lorsell’s career at Sandvik began as a consultant in 2014. Since then, she has become a full-time employee and had a variety of roles at Sandvik in Sandviken, a Swedish town where the company remains the largest employer in the region.

Works in Human Resources Services

Up until recently, Lorsell was the Team Lead for the recruitment team within Human Resources Services . “I have worked hard and been given opportunities to develop and take on bigger assignments. I’m humbled and proud to now be the Acting Manager for Recruitment within HR Services Sweden,” she says.

Her job includes working with recruitment and employer branding. “I want us to be honest. We still have work to do, but I am a true ambassador for our brand and how we behave and treat each other and our core values.”

Ever since she was little, Lorsell has been thoughtful of those around her.

I am a team player, and true believer in helping others to achieve better results. I like to give encouragement and let people in the shadows know that we are here and you are not alone in the Sandvik family.

Already at the age of five, she joined her big sister Cecilia and her hockey coach father Hasse at hockey school. Hockey became a way of life for her and eventually she was offered a scholarship to study and play ice hockey on Mercyhurst’s women’s team, in the USA’s highest college league.

Lorsell returned to Sweden and played elite hockey with the Swedish Brynäs IF team and represented Sweden in three World Championships. While training for the national Olympic team in 2005 she met Joa, her wife and partner of 20 years. “I was the last cut, but Joa has played in three Olympic games, including the Turin Winter Olympics. We have a fair number of cool medals at home!”

Played hockey 20 hours a week

Much of her earlier life was spent playing hockey about 20 hours a week, studying, and having to work at the same time to support herself. “I learned how to be efficient. I’m fast but thorough and can easily prioritize,” she says. Lorsell eventually earned a bachelor’s degree in HR and Labor Relations at the University of Gävle in 2012.

She truly appreciates the inclusive atmosphere at Sandvik. “I haven’t felt discriminated for how I live and I’m proud to be with a company that has that kind of culture. I’m also fortunate to live in a country where it’s okay to live as I do and I know that not all of our colleagues around the world are that fortunate.”

Work-life balance in focus

Lorsell, who grew up in Stockholm, has been living in the small town of Valbo, near Sandviken, since 2007. Her wife’s parents live just 400 meters away and the couple have an active family life and busy social circle. “We love it here,” she says. “We built our own house and have a big yard, a pool, a ping pong table and a huge trampoline for the kids.”

These days, hockey has taken a back seat to work and family life with eleven-year-old Nikki and four-year-old Neo. “I want to maximize our time doing things together as a family and have achieved a great work-life balance.”

Three quick questions

What do you appreciate most about the Sandvik culture?

"Sandvik lets me be me. We have an inclusive culture. People know they are seen and heard, and you can be who you want to be – you can be a woman married to a woman, for example."

How does an inclusive culture help employees and the company itself?

"Everyone has something to bring to the table. If you have that safe space, people can ask questions and come up with better ideas. They can also grow and feel better about themselves – and you have a lot more fun together! This applies to working with our customers as well. An inclusive culture helps the business and profitability."

What else stands out about working at Sandvik?

"We care about each other at Sandvik in a way that I haven’t seen anywhere else. People are open and offer help if, for example you have a tight deadline, and your child is sick. My team feels like a second family, and this helps us develop."
