About the role
The Product Safety Engineer conducts safety activities to develop and carry out assessments, tests, and experiments to gauge the safety levels of surface pedestal drills and drive safety goals. The Engineer will ensure compliance with directives, established industry safety and design standards and guidelines. Participates in purchasing, manufacturing, designing and reconstruction of production equipment and products and service solutions.
Scope of responsibilities
Review new and changed legislation, directives, standards as well as major stakeholder requirements, make interpretations as needed, create policies, and transform the results into clear requirements.
Advise and assist Projects, Engineering, and other stakeholders in certification issues, such as CE declarations and certificates. Responsible for making sure guidelines, standards and instructions are followed regarding purchasing, manufacturing, design and reconstruction of production equipment and products. Define requirements for suppliers to assure guidelines and standards are met. Audit of manufacturer and suppliers’ knowledge, experience and track record regarding applicable directives and standards, internally and externally. Verification of quality of marking and certification.
You possess a Master’s or Bachelor’s degree of Science in safety engineering or a relevant field of expertise with safety engineering as a minor. 5+ years of related experience in heavy equipment or related industry. Alternatively, you hold a B.Sc in an engineering discipline and 10+ years of related safety experience. You have a collaborative and consultative mindset and comfortable working with multiple stakeholders. Relevant product safety and compliance work with emphasis on functional safety within the heavy equipment industry is preferred. Participation in preparation of product usage and precautionary label instructions. Maintaining safety records in accordance with regulations and standards. Standardization and environmental design preferred. Reading and interpreting engineering documentation. Basic familiarity with engineering change processes. Working with or the development of safety regulations and or standards.
Additional requirements and competencies
- Proven behaviors and skills for product safety and compliance.
- Functional safety lifecycle, including: Process Hazard Analysis (PHA), Consequence Analysis, Layer of Protection Analysis (LOPA), Safety Integrity Level (SIL), Safety Requirements Specification (SRS) generation, failure rates, device and system reliability, and safety verification
- Functional knowledge of electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, and control sub-systems
- Ability to understand and enforce safety and environmental regulations & standards
- Strong oral/written/social skills and ability to lead group projects and management reviews
- Ability to mentor, lead, and train others at all levels in basic safety principles
- Able to work both independently and within a team environment
- Ability to clearly communicate complex concepts
