Mechanical Engineer - Universal Field Robots

Universal Field Robots – A Sandvik Company
Mechanical Engineer – Eagle Farm, Qld.

About the opportunity:

We’re seeking a talented Mechanical Design Engineer to join our team at Universal Field Robots (UFR), a Sandvik company. In this role, you’ll take ownership of the end-to-end mechanical design process—from concept development and CAD modelling to prototyping, testing, and deployment—creating advanced automation solutions for heavy machinery in mining environments.

You’ll design robust mechanical systems and attachments that integrate seamlessly with perception, control, and autonomous navigation technologies. Working closely with robotics and software engineers, you’ll ensure reliability and performance in harsh conditions while supporting full product lifecycle activities, including design reviews, documentation, and manufacturing.

This is a hands-on role where you’ll contribute to innovative projects, collaborate across disciplines, and occasionally travel to customer sites for installation, commissioning, and support. If you’re passionate about applying modern engineering practices to deliver scalable, safe, and high-performance solutions, this is your opportunity to make a real impact in the future of mining automation.

Responsibilities:

  • Design robust attachments along with mechanical systems that support perception, control, and autonomous navigation technologies.
  • Develop detailed 3D models, engineering drawings, and specifications.
  • Perform detailed engineering analysis to ensure reliability and performance in harsh environments.
  • Support the full product lifecycle, including design reviews, documentation, manufacturing, deployment and ongoing support.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate mechanical systems with electronics, sensors, and software.
  • Understand customer and project requirements.
  • Support the installation and assembly phase of prototype components and parts. Evaluate the QA/QC process on new designs.
  • Collaborate effectively with product managers and cross-functional teams, in a fast-paced and agile environment.
  • You’ll play a key role in delivering scalable, safe, and high-performance mechanical solutions, applying modern engineering practices and tools. This role includes periodic domestic and international travel to customer sites for installation, commissioning, and support.

About you:

You are a degree-qualified Mechanical Engineer with a passion for designing and developing complex mechanical systems that operate in demanding environments. You bring hands-on experience in end-to-end mechanical design, including concept development, CAD modelling, prototyping, and testing, and you’re confident working with heavy machinery or industrial equipment.

Your technical expertise is complemented by strong analytical skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams. You thrive in fast-paced, agile environments and enjoy solving real-world engineering challenges that push the boundaries of automation.

Ideally, you have experience integrating mechanical systems with electronics, sensors, and software, and you’re comfortable supporting field deployments and installation activities. Exposure to mining, robotics, or automation systems will be highly regarded.

Above all, you are detail-oriented, proactive, and committed to delivering safe, scalable, and high-performance solutions that drive innovation and support UFR’s mission to transform heavy equipment automation.

Agencies need not apply.
To be eligible for this role, you must have the right to live and work in Australia. Please note that as part of our recruitment process, you will be required to successfully complete a pre-employment medical.
