Research & Development
Senior R&D Professional
Do you thrive where deep science meets real-world manufacturing – taking ideas from lab concept to scientifically validated solutions for cutting tools? Then this is your next step!
Why Sandvik Coromant?
This role sits at the core of our materials and surface engineering passion, where hard coatings deposited by Chemical Vapor Deposition help shape the next generation of metal cutting solutions through increased performance and productivity. We offer you:
- Hands-on work with advanced R&D equipment in a highly skilled environment.
- To make a visible impact by designing, developing, and validating coating materials and processes that move into production.
- The chance to be part of a global innovative-driven company culture that values inclusion, collaboration, and continuous learning.
Your mission
You play a key role in advancing our scientific and technological foundation in CVD coating science. Your focus is to generate new understanding, concepts, and capabilities while ensuring that promising ideas are scientifically matured and technically prepared for industrial application. By applying fundamental knowledge such as growth kinetics, phase formation, and microstructure evolution, you contribute to R&D decision-making and support the transfer of innovation into production.
You collaborate closely across functions and/or with external partners in knowledge and product development projects, spanning multiple technology and manufacturing readiness levels, contributing to long‑term capability building.
Included in your responsibilities:
- Lead and execute CVD‑focused R&D initiatives, translating hypotheses into validated, production‑relevant coating processes.
- Design structured experimental programs and apply data‑driven analysis to link process parameters, microstructure, and functional properties.
- Plan and conduct laboratory and pilot‑scale experimental campaigns, including advanced coating characterization when needed.
- Develop scientifically grounded process concepts to support industrialization, scalability, and long‑term process robustness.
- Document, communicate, and share results through high‑quality technical reports, presentations, and knowledge transfer.
- Contribute to intellectual property through invention disclosures and patent‑related activities.
Location and flexibility
The location for this position is Västberga, Stockholm where you’re a present and interactive colleague. Some travel is included in your work, linked among others to production trials and close collaboration with our manufacturing site in Gimo.
Your profile
You have a strong foundation in materials and coating science and the ability to turn technical innovation into scalable, industrially relevant solutions.
You bring:
- A PhD or master’s degree in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Physics or a related field.
- A solid background from production-related environments (production technology or working close to manufacturing) is highly beneficial
- Hands-on experience with CVD equipment, processes, and hard coatings materials, as well as related characterization methods (e.g. SEM, XRD, EDS) and data interpretation.
- The ability to formulate research questions, design experiments, and work analytically in complex environments
- Strong communication and project management skills and the ability to collaborate across disciplines.
- Professional fluency in English, knowledge of Swedish is a plus.
You work in a structured and analytical manner, combining curiosity with rigor. You’re comfortable navigating uncertainty, prioritizing learning where knowledge gaps exist, and building shared understanding across disciplines. You naturally coach others by sharing best practices and guiding scientific thinking and experimentation.
