Principal Data Scientist

The Digitalization and Automation team at Sandvik’s Research and Technology Development is seeking an experienced, proactive, and results-oriented Principal data scientist with a collaborative attitude to join our team based in Myllypuro, Tampere, Finland. We are part of the Technology Development and Services organization within the Digital Mining Technologies Division, one of the ten divisions in Sandvik Mining. This role requires on-site presence at our factory and state-of-the-art test mine in Tampere, with the flexibility for partial remote work.

Your Role as a Principal data scientist at Sandvik, your core responsibilities are in data collection, preparation and cleaning, and conducting analyzes to identify patters, trends, and anomalies, enabling our capabilities to develop machine learning applications and advanced mathematical algorithms to both cloud and edge environments. You will be responsible for architecting our Azure MLOps to accelerate us concepting new machine learning and advanced mathematical algorithms for our internal customers. You will engage in hands-on work in a state-of-the-art on-site Test Mine and Test Pit environments to ensure the effective data collection, and testing of the new developed solutions. You get to test the outcomes of your personal development with our state-of-art underground drilling and load and hauling concept machines Amelia and AutoMine® Concept, along with the futuristic and visionary concept machines yet to come.

Key responsibilities:

  • Leading projects involving edge, cloud, and data science technologies.
  • Azure MLOPS architecture maintenance
  • Data collection from state-of-art sensors such as 3D lidars, radars, cameras, and telemetry data from e.g. machine control systems
  • ML model cloud and local development
  • ML model training and evaluation.
  • ML model edge deployment, testing and inference.
  • Managing containerization technologies like Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Ensuring DevOps practices and effective utilization of tools.

Background and skills:

  • Suitable technical education (such as M.Sc.) in computer science, data science or engineering
  • 3+ years of experience with modern cloud-based MLOps development, preferably in Azure ML.
  • 2+ years of experience in deployment, testing and inference of edge applications.
  • Experience in data set management and ML pipelines.
  • Strong skills in cloud and data science.
  • Knowledge of containerization technologies like Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Familiarity with DevOps practices and tools.
  • Experience in managing and coordinating outsourced projects.
