R&D Manager - Mechanical Engineering

This position is permanent and located at Sandvik’s Turku site which is the cutting-edge product development and manufacturing center for our Load and Haul equipment.

About the Mechanical Engineering team

As an R&D Manager, you lead a team of engineers working in mechanical engineering domain. Size of the team is approximately 20 people, consisting of both Sandvik internal and external engineers. The team focuses on mechanical engineering work of underground loaders and trucks, working closely with FEM, hydraulics, electrical and other specialists to deliver holistic and high-quality solutions. Scope of the work covers new product development (NPD), current product engineering (CPE) and order-based engineering (OBE).

Your primary areas of responsibility

  • Coaching and developing the team through excellent leadership skills.

  • Planning and managing the technology development activities in mechanical engineering.

  • Budgeting and capacity planning with resourcing for projects and activities.

  • Developing engineering tools and ways of working.

  • Securing patents and immaterial rights protection in this technology area.

  • Fulfilling customer expectations for current and future Load and Haul product offering.

  • Ensuring health and safety through promotion of safe work practices, training, and compliance with safety policies.

  • Position includes some travelling (usually planned well in advance).

Your background and what we find important

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in engineering.

  • A proven record of leading an engineering or a project team with good results.

  • Extensive experience in mechanical engineering (typically 8+ years), specifically in steel structures. Experience in mobile machinery is highly beneficial.

  • Knowledge of 3D CAD and related data management system, NX and Teamcenter knowledge is beneficial.

  • Experience in managing a resource pool of external employees.

  • Knowledge of FEM and latest steel structure manufacturing methods are beneficial.

  • Proactive and systematic way of working and excellent skills in problem-solving.

  • Fluent communication skills in English (Finnish skills are beneficial).
