Master Thesis Project – Controlled nucleation for wear-resistant CVD thin films

At Sandvik Coromant, we offer you the possibility to do a Master of Science thesis in the technical areas of chemical vapor deposition (CVD), materials science and materials characterization. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge surface engineering research with direct industrial relevance – combining process development, materials science and advanced analysis techniques!

Welcome to a world leading, global industrial player who believes in taking a holistic approach to manufacturing, one that leads to healthy habits for the long term – we believe in manufacturing wellness!

Background and scope of the project

The aim of the proposed thesis project is to develop novel types of wear-resistant CVD coatings by chemically tuning the nucleation processes taking place in the early stages of film growth. You will test several types of chemical surface treatments and compare them with respect to the coating properties and performance. You will perform hands-on experimental research by using state-of-the-art CVD reactors, where process parameters are systematically varied to influence film texture, adhesion, and growth kinetics. To unravel the complex interplay between nucleation dynamics and final coating properties, you will use materials characterization techniques such as XRD, EDS and SEM.

The thesis project lasts 20 weeks, starting in January 2026. The location is Stockholm in Västberga, at our large R&D facility dedicated to materials research and technology development. Please note that we do not have the possibility to assist with relocation to or within Sweden.

Your profile

We are looking for a highly motivated student in engineering physics, chemical engineering, or materials science. You have an interest in experimental work. You will present your findings to a large audience of technicians, engineers, and experts at our R&D center. Acting in a truly global environment calls for excellent English skills, verbally and in writing.
