The Digitalization and Automation team at Sandvik’s Research and Technology Development is seeking an experienced, proactive, and results-oriented Automation and Robotics Specialist with a collaborative attitude to join our team based in Myllypuro, Tampere, Finland. We are part of the Technology Development and Services organization within the Digital Mining Technologies Division, one of the ten divisions in Sandvik Mining and Rock Solutions. This role requires on-site presence at our factory and state-of-the-art test mine in Tampere, with flexibility for partial remote work.

Your role as an Automation and Robotics Specialist, you will be at the forefront of developing real-time software and measuring systems on our surface and underground mining machines. You will implement new and enhance existing automation features to accelerate the level of unmanned operation of current and future mining machines. You will understand complex modular systems and have the drive to develop software interfaces and adapters to enable dataflow between different components. You will do model-based control design and implementations and conduct the testing firsthand in SIL/HIL environments, followed by later engagement in hands-on work in state-of-the-art on-site Test Mine and Test Pit environments to ensure the effective deployment of solutions on board mobile mining machines. You will get to test the outcomes of your personal development with our state-of-art underground drilling and load and hauling concept machines, Amelia and AutoMine® Concept.

Key responsibilities

  • Developing real-time software and measuring systems.

  • Model-based control system designing and implementation.

  • Interface software work and initial commissioning and testing of dataflows.

  • Software deployment, update, and testing on SIL/HIL and real underground and surface mine environments.

  • Firmware deployment and update on industrial on-board computers.

  • Gaining a wide understanding of our existing autonomous concept machines and the capability to demonstrate the machines to internal and external customers.

Background and skills

  • Suitable technical education in automation, robotics, or software engineering.

  • 3+ years of experience in real-time software and instrumentation.

  • Experience in designing and implementing model-based control systems.

    • MATLAB Simulink and StateFlow experience is preferred.

  • Previous knowledge of wheeled mobile robot kinematics and dynamics.

    • Understanding of mobile manipulator kinematics and dynamics is preferred.

  • Knowledge of real-time operating systems and Linux OS.

  • Proficiency in programming languages like MATLAB, C/C++, Python

  • Experience with communication protocols such as DDS, gRPC, CANOPen and J1939.

  • Experience working with typical autonomy sensors such as lidars, cameras, radars, and IMU.

  • Basic data analysis skills with the ability to interpret data from the sensors.

  • Experience in safety sensors and systems development is preferred but not essential.

  • Experience in ROS2 middleware is preferred but not essential.

  • Competence in managing and coordinating outsourced projects is preferred.
