The Digitalization and Automation team at Sandvik’s Research and Technology Development is seeking an experienced, proactive, and results-oriented Machine Learning Engineer with a collaborative attitude to join our team based in Myllypuro, Tampere, Finland. We are part of the Technology Development and Services organization within the Digital Mining Technologies Division, one of the ten divisions in Sandvik Mining and Rock Solutions. This role requires on-site presence at our factory and state-of-the-art test mine in Tampere, with flexibility for partial remote work.

Your role as a Machine Learning Engineer at Sandvik, you will lead machine learning and AI projects for the development and deployment of new digital solutions to both cloud and edge environments. Your work will enhance Sandvik’s utilization of AI and machine learning by introducing new tools and solutions to all Sandvik divisions. In collaboration with the digitalization team, you will enhance the functionalities of mobile mining machines through advanced machine learning edge solutions. You will play crucial part in implementing MLOps and DevOps ways of working, provide guidance and consultation, and engage in hands-on work in state-of-the-art on-site Test Mine and Test Pit environments to ensure the effective deployment, maintenance, and handover of the new developed solutions. You will get to test the outcomes of your personal development with our state-of-art underground drilling and load and hauling concept machines Amelia and AutoMine® Concept.

Key responsibilities

  • Leading projects involving edge, cloud, and data science technologies.

  • Model edge deployment, testing, and inference.

  • Model training and evaluation.

  • Implementing CI/CD pipelines and MLops tools for machine learning.

  • Managing containerization technologies like Docker and Kubernetes.

  • Ensuring DevOps practices and effective utilization of tools.

Background and skills

  • Suitable technical education (such as M.Sc.) in computer science, data science, or engineering

  • 3+ years of experience with modern cloud-based MLOps development, preferably in Azure ML.

  • Proficiency in deployment, testing, and inference of edge applications.

  • Strong skills in cloud and data science.

  • Knowledge of containerization technologies like Docker and Kubernetes.

  • Familiarity with DevOps practices and tools.

  • Proficiency in data set management and ML pipelines.

  • Experience in managing and coordinating outsourced projects.
