Data Scientist

Sandvik Mining is a leading supplier in equipment and tools, parts, service, support and technical solutions for the mining industry and niches such as tunnelling, quarrying, demolition, dimensional stone, recycling and civil engineering.

We are now looking for a Data Scientist for our agile cloud and edge computing development team in the Sandvik Digital Services unit to support the growing demand for remote monitoring and analytics services. The preferable location is Tampere, Finland.

Your role

As a Data Scientist, you are responsible for developing advanced analytics solutions. You work in a team of Data Scientists, Data Engineers and Software Developers and other subject matter experts to gain and share insights into data. Your role contributes directly to improving our customers’ productivity, safety and sustainability. Your produced results will help reduce energy usage and material wastage.

Your main responsibilities will include

  • Your predictive models and optimization algorithms are integrated into the customer workflows, directly impacting the business of our customers.
  • Work with large, complex data sets to extract meaningful insights
  • Build and optimize deep learning models (e.g., neural networks, transformers, predictive models, recommendation systems, NLP applications)
  • Develop and deploy AI solutions into production environments in collaboration with data engineers and software developers.
  • Stay updated with the latest advancements in AI and machine learning
  • Conduct experiments and evaluate model performance

Your background

In this role, success requires a strong mathematical and analytical foundation, supported by solid coding and machine learning expertise. You bring a master’s or PhD in applied physics, mathematics, computer science, or data science, along with the curiosity and drive to explore new ideas and transform them into robust, scalable solutions in close collaboration with the team. You are comfortable working independently, navigating complex data environments, and applying advanced analytics to real-world problems. Experience with software development, data engineering, and modern tooling will help you thrive as you build predictive models and intelligent data-driven solutions. As the organization is a global player, you naturally need well-developed English skills.

Key Skills & Qualifications

  • Master’s/PhD in applied physics, mathematics, computer science, or data science
  • Strong mathematical, analytical, coding, and machine learning skills
  • Extensive experience with analytics tools and programming languages (e.g., Python, JavaScript, Databricks)
  • Knowledge of applied analytics, machine learning methods, and data modelling
  • Experience working with database technologies
  • Skilled in querying, processing, and analyzing large datasets (BIG data)
  • Familiarity with common data visualization tools
  • Experience in software development or data engineering (distinct advantage)
  • Domain knowledge of Sandvik equipment telemetry data (advantageous)
  • Curious mindset with the ability to work independently
  • Experience with technologies such as containers, version control systems, databases, and cloud services.
