Estimator

Sandvik Mining
Estimator – Orange NSW or Pooraka SA

About the opportunity

The Workshop Estimator is a pivotal member of the operations team, responsible for delivering precise estimates for customer projects, repairs, and maintenance services. This role requires a keen ability to evaluate job specifications, source accurate pricing for labour, materials, and third-party services, and collaborate effectively with customers, suppliers, and internal stakeholders.

By ensuring estimates are both commercially viable and operationally achievable, the Workshop Estimator directly contributes to the profitability, quality, and efficiency of workshop operations. Additionally, this role plays a vital part in maintaining consistency and best practices in estimating processes across regional teams.

This role is primarily office-based but requires regular presence in the workshop and may require visits to customer and supplier sites, including mine sites and other industrial environments.

Responsibilities:

  • Review job and tender specifications to develop accurate, competitive cost estimates aligned with customer requirements.
  • Calculate labour, material, equipment, and subcontractor costs to support detailed pricing proposals.
  • Source and negotiate supplier and subcontractor quotes to ensure cost efficiency and accuracy.
  • Identify and implement cost-saving initiatives without compromising quality or service delivery.
  • Track actual job performance against estimates to identify variances and improve cost forecasting.
  • Analyse historical project data to refine baseline estimates and enhance future pricing accuracy.
  • Collaborate with workshop supervisors, technicians, and stakeholders to assess job scope, feasibility, and resource needs.
  • Ensure all estimates comply with industry standards, safety regulations, and Sandvik procedures.
  • Maintain and update records of estimates, revisions, and final job costs for reporting and analysis.
  • Support the development and maintenance of a centralised cost estimate library and BOM templates.
  • Participate in change management and feedback processes to improve estimating tools, systems, and practices.
  • Present clear, transparent estimates to customers, supporting trust and informed decision-making

About you

You are a detail-oriented and results-driven professional with proven experience in cost estimation, ideally within workshop or manufacturing environments. Your strong understanding of workshop operations, maintenance workflows, and inventory control enables you to develop accurate and competitive estimates. You bring in-depth knowledge of materials, labour cost structures, and workshop procedures, along with a solid grasp of industry standards, safety regulations, and compliance requirements.

Proficient in scheduling tools and ERP systems such as Maximo, you are highly organised and excel at managing competing priorities in fast-paced settings. Your ability to consistently meet deadlines, coupled with excellent time management skills, makes you a reliable contributor to any team. A trade qualification or a bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related field would be highly regarded.
