Direct Materials Purchasing Leader

Summary

The Direct Material Leader is a key leadership role responsible for overseeing the direct material procurement process. This position involves optimizing supply chain operations and ensuring the efficient and cost-effective sourcing of materials required for production. The Material leader will lead a diverse team including Tool Stores, Logistics, and production areas.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Provide guidance, training, and support to team members to ensure they meet performance objectives.
  • Foster a collaborative and high-performance work environment.
  • Develop and implement strategic sourcing plans to optimize the procurement of direct materials.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional and global teams to align sourcing strategies with organizational goals and production requirements.
  • Analyze market trends and maintain awareness of industry developments to inform sourcing decisions.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with direct material suppliers.
  • Lead negotiations on contracts, terms, and conditions to secure favorable agreements.
  • Oversee supplier performance, conduct regular reviews, and address issues to ensure continuous improvement.
  • Drive cost reduction initiatives through effective negotiation, process improvement, and collaboration with suppliers.
  • Monitor and analyze cost trends, providing insights and recommendations for cost optimization.
  • Work closely with finance teams to ensure budget adherence and cost-effectiveness.
  • Generate of purchase orders, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders, including production and logistics, to manage material requirements and optimize inventory levels.
  • Implement strategies to reduce lead times and minimize stockouts.
  • Ensure that direct materials meet established quality standards through collaboration with quality assurance teams and monitor compliance with relevant laws, regulations, and ethical standards in procurement activities.
  • Identify and assess potential risks in the supply chain, developing and implementing strategies to mitigate disruption while staying informed about industry and market dynamics that may impact the availability of direct materials.
  • Oversee the maintenance of accurate records related to purchasing transactions, contracts, and supplier communications.
  • Prepare and present regular reports on key performance indicators, cost savings, and overall procurement effectiveness.

Profile and Skills

  • Degree in Business, Supply Chain Management, or 5+ years’ experience in purchasing, direct material procurement, and leading a team.
  • Strong leadership, communication, interpersonal skills, and attention to detail
  • In-depth knowledge of supply chain dynamics, strategic sourcing, and procurement best practices
  • Forecasting and Analysis Knowledge
  • Understanding of ERP/MRP/SAP systems and Microsoft Office (specifically Excel).
