Thesis Project –Inclination Angle Investigation

Sandvik Coromant is a global market-leading manufacturer of tools and tooling systems for advanced industrial metal cutting. In this thesis project you will be investigating the effect different inclination angles have on the milling process.

Background and scope of the project
The geometry of a cutting edge in milling is defined by several angels, surfaces and edge rounding’s, each contributing to the cutting process in its own way. Many of the features are relatively well known and some are known to a lesser extent. In this thesis project the aim is to focus on the Inclination angle and investigate how different inclination angles affect the cutting process in areas such as sound, power consumption, edge toughness etc.

Work description

The work includes a theoretical part where earlier studies and studies of other parameters is analyzed. Tests will then be conducted on a pre-designed and manufactured set of tools that cover a suitable span of angles. The result will then be used to design a new insert geometry based on the learnings from the test.

Work location

The work location is Sandviken and we expect you to work as much as possible on-site to build networks and get good support from the organization

Student background
We are looking for a student with background in mechanical engineering, computational science or similar. Experience in manufacturing industry is an advantage but not a requirement.
