Senior Manager - Materials Management

Sandvik Mining & Rock Solutions (SMR) is a leading supplier in equipment and tools, services and technical solutions for the mining and construction industries. Our application areas include rock drilling, rock cutting, crushing, and screening, loading, and hauling, tunnelling, quarrying, and breaking and demolition. To our Rock Tools division and the Production Unit in Patancheru, we are now looking for a Senior Manager – Materials Management to join us.

Your scope:

The Materials Management Manager will serve as the strategic leader for the company’s end‑to‑end materials value chain, encompassing Direct Purchasing, Subcontracting, Strategic Sourcing, Inbound Warehousing, Inventory Management, Scrap Management, and Inbound Logistics. This role holds enterprise‑level accountability for ensuring uninterrupted availability of direct materials to production, overseeing import and customs operations, and enforcing rigorous compliance across taxation and procurement governance.

The leader will drive operational excellence by leveraging SAP MM, WM, TM, and EWM to strengthen process discipline, enhance visibility, and enable data‑driven decision‑making. Through strong leadership across cross‑functional teams and supplier ecosystems, the role is responsible for elevating service performance, optimizing cost and quality outcomes, and ensuring compliance with organizational and regulatory standards.

To be more specific, your main responsibilities to handle in this position are:

Safety, EHS & Compliance

  • Ensure a strong safety culture across all Materials Management operations including warehouses, stores, scrap yards, and subcontractor sites.
  • Maintain compliance with EHS and QMS standards, ensuring audit readiness.
  • Demonstrate integrity, transparency, and ethical behavior in end‑to‑end Materials Management operations
  • Ensure full compliance with the company’s Code of Conduct and Adhere strictly to company Core Values

Direct Purchasing (Direct Materials)

  • Own source-to-contract and procure-to-pay cycles for raw materials and components.
  • Develop and execute cost-reduction strategies (VA/VE, should-costing, long-term agreements, indexation).
  • Ensure supplier performance (OTD, quality PPM, sustainability, capacity readiness) with SRM/scorecards.
  • Manage RFx, negotiations, contracts/MSAs, price revisions, and payment terms.

Subcontracting & Supplier Collaboration

  • Set up and manage subcontracting arrangements (BOMs, rate contracts, service SLAs, issue/receipt reconciliation).
  • Monitor WIP at subcontractor sites, yields, scrap/claim recovery, and logistics.
  • Enable VMI/consignment models and collaborative planning with strategic vendors.

Strategic Sourcing & Category Management

  • Build category strategies aligned to business demand, risk, and total landed cost.
  • Conduct market intelligence, dual/multi-sourcing, localization, and supplier development.
  • Drive NPI/NPD sourcing, early supplier involvement, and cost/time-to-market improvements.

Warehouse, Inventory & Inbound Logistics

  • Lead warehousing operations (receipts, put away, storage, line feeding, cycle counts, dispatch).
  • Optimize inventory policies (safety stock, MOQ/EOQ, reorder points, ABC/XYZ) and reduce slow/non-moving stock.
  • Implement 5S, EHS, visual management, and lean/Kaizen in warehouses and shopfloor logistics.
  • Coordinate inbound logistics, ASN compliance, carrier performance, and dock scheduling.

Scrap Management

  • Oversee the complete Scrap Management process including identification of scrap/waste, segregation, measurement, storage, and disposal as per company policy and statutory norms.
  • Ensure waste and scrap management strictly follows the Pollution Control Board (PCB) Consent conditions (CTE/CTO) and all environmental regulations.
  • Ensure timely scrap disposal and sale through legally approved channels such as registered vendors, tendering, e‑auction, and GST‑compliant invoicing.
  • Coordinate with Finance, Production, Quality, and EHS for scrap valuation, approvals, documentation, and audits.
  • Maintain accurate scrap records in SAP, ensuring correct movement types, posting accuracy, and inventory reconciliation.
  • Drive improvement initiatives to reduce scrap/waste generation by engaging with Production, EHS teams and Quality teams.

Imports, Customs & Compliance

  • Oversee import documentation, classification (HS codes), valuation, and customs clearance end-to-end.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable taxation, customs and foreign trade regulations (e.g., GST, Customs Act, Foreign Trade Policy and other trade compliances as applicable).
  • Manage benefits/duty exemptions (e.g., EPCG/Advance Authorization), bond management, and audits.
  • Maintain robust record-keeping, SOPs, and readiness for internal/external/ statutory audits.
  • Deal, correspond and represent with all Statutory Authority of Goods & Service Tax Act (GST), Customs, Director General of Foreign Trade.

SAP Ownership & Process Excellence

  • Own business process design and governance in SAP MM, WM, TM, and EWM.
  • MM: Purchasing, Info Records, Source Lists, Contracts, Subcontracting, MRP Signals, Vendor Returns.
  • WM/EWM: Put-away, storage types, HU/handling units, wave/picking, bin management, physical inventory.
  • TM: Freight order management, carrier selection, freight settlement, track & trace.
  • Partner with IT/COE for enhancements, master data governance (MDG), integrations (barcoding/RFID/scales), and analytics.
  • Deploy KPIs dashboards and enable exception-based management.

Scenario Planning & Risk Mitigation

  • Identify risks related to materials availability, supplier capacity, logistics constraints, import delays, regulatory changes, and warehouse operational challenges.
  • Develop scenario‑based plans (best case, base case, worst case) for procurement, inventory, supplier readiness, and logistics continuity.
  • Build and maintain a Supply Chain Risk Register, ensuring mitigation plans are executed on time.
  • Develop contingency and conduct proactive risk reviews based on MRP alerts, supplier intelligence, market trends, and demand fluctuations.
  • Collaborate with Production, Planning, Quality, Sourcing, and Finance to ensure cross-functional alignment and business continuity during disruptions.

People Leadership & Stakeholder Management

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a multi-layer team across purchasing, subcontracting, sourcing, warehousing, and logistics.
  • Collaborate with Production, Planning, Quality, Engineering, Business controlling/ Finance and Legal/Tax teams
  • Drive a culture of safety, compliance, customer orientation, and continuous improvement.

Success Metrics (KPIs)

  • Cost & Value: YoY material cost reduction %, PPV, TLC savings, should-cost adherence.
  • Service: Supplier OTD %, plan adherence, lead-time reduction, no line stoppages.
  • Quality: Supplier PPM, incoming rejection rate, corrective action closure time.
  • Inventory & WH: Inventory turns, DII, accuracy (>99%), slow/non-moving reduction, warehouse utilization.
  • Logistics: Freight cost per kg/CBM, inbound OTIF, minimal demurrage/ detention.
  • Compliance: 100% audit readiness, no major non-conformance; on-time statutory filings.
  • People: Engagement, attrition, capability building, succession readiness.

Your profile:

Candidate should have 15+ years of experience in Direct Materials Procurement/Supply Chain for a manufacturing engineering industry, including 5+ years in leadership roles managing multi-functional teams with strong domain knowledge of subcontracting, imports/customs, GST & taxation in purchasing, vendor development, scrap management, warehousing, and logistics. Hands-on leadership in SAP MM, WM, TM, EWM (must-have). Exposure to SRM/Ariba, MDG, barcoding/RFID is a plus.

A Graduate Engineer in Mechanical/Production/Metallurgy/Industrial Engineering with MBA/PGDBA in Supply Chain Operations from any reputed institutions is preferred.

You have previously worked with strong EHS cultured organizations, and you understand the importance of a diverse workforce and collaborative settings

  • Strong understanding of manufacturing processes in engineering industries, including Forging, machining, heat treatment, and subcontracting, with expertise in discrete manufacturing.
  • Deep knowledge in metals and other materials, including steel sourcing, including alloy steel classification, manufacturing routes, heat planning, metallurgical requirement and procurement.
  • Strategic sourcing, Purchasing & category management; contract & vendor management.
  • Subcontracting flows, cost modelling, and reconciliation.
  • Deep knowledge of imports, customs regulations, GST, freight rules, Incoterms and statutory documentation.
  • Inventory optimization, JIT/KANBAN, warehouse design, and lean intralogistics.
  • Scrap &Waste Management and sale process adhering to legal/statutory compliance
  • Customs compliance, HS classification, import documentation, and duty schemes.
  • SAP process design, data governance, and KPI/analytics orientation.
