Senior Data Scientist

Business Unit Automation is the home of AutoMine® - the world-leading solution for autonomous mining - and Newtrax – the world leader in collision avoidance and operations management solutions for underground mining – and Universal Field Robots UFR, a fast-growing Australia-based provider of autonomous interoperable solutions for the surface mining and underground mining markets.

Our hubs are located in Tampere (Finland), Montreal (Canada) and Brisbane (Australia) where we focus on developing fully automated and robotic mining technologies for mobile machinery, and safety solutions up to collision avoidance system (CAS) Level 9 solutions and operations management. Our overriding aim is to make mining safer and more sustainable for the future. We work closely together with our Sandvik Mining sales areas to serve our customers across the globe, striving for the highest level of service and support.

We are looking for Senior Data Scientist a data-driven problem solver who can transform mining data into actionable insights and predictive solutions. You will also participate in adaptive operations design for autonomous machines. You will work with diverse datasets to analyse, model, and optimize mining operations, leveraging advanced analytics and machine learning. You have also abilities to be the lead engineer of a team of data scientists and data engineers. This role is highly collaborative, offering a supportive team environment where you’ll work closely with talented colleagues across disciplines and geographies. This is a role reporting to the Technology Programs Manager in R&D. The position is based in Tampere, Finland at our home office in Tulli Business Park located in the city center.

What you’ll do:

  • Collect, clean, and integrate data from multiple sources.
  • Develop statistical models and machine learning algorithms to predict and optimize operational performance.
  • Build data visualizations and dashboards to communicate insights effectively.
  • Collaborate with domain experts to identify opportunities for data-driven improvements.
  • Automate workflows and deploy models into production using Python and modern data science tools.

What we’re looking for:

  • Strong skills in Python (pandas, scikit-learn, etc.) and SQL.
  • Experience with data modeling, feature engineering, and predictive analytics.
  • Familiarity with visualization tools (e.g., Power BI, Bold BI, or custom dashboards).
  • Ability to learn quickly and apply creative thinking to real-world challenges.
  • Bonus: Knowledge of mining or industrial processes.

Your Qualifications and Key Responsibilities

  • Over 3 years of hands-on experience in data engineering, specializing in advanced SQL, ETL/ELT processing, and database administration for PostgreSQL and Microsoft SQL Server, with expertise in performance tuning and dimensional modeling.
  • Skilled in business intelligence using Power BI and/or Bold BI for data modeling, DAX/expressions, row-level security (RLS), and scheduled data refreshes, as well as low-code development in Retool for building queries and app components.
  • Proficient in Python and JavaScript for developing data and application logic, with a strong foundation in testing, quality assurance, Git version control, and promoting solutions across environments.
  • Demonstrates a creative, self-driven approach to problem-solving, operating confidently across data, application, and infrastructure layers, and bringing a vertical understanding of mining operations and industrial processes.
  • Bonus capabilities include experience with Azure Data Factory, workflow automation tools (n8n), AI agents/Copilots, Linux, Docker/Kubernetes, IoT/streaming platforms (MQTT, Kafka), and mining/industrial telemetry integrations.

Your Profile

You have a relevant technical education (e.g., Master of Science), and prior experience working with the specified context. We value your experience of working in teams, and your experience of mining, automation or mobile equipment in international business environment. You can specify, plan, and document your ideas and you have a proactive systematic and structured way of working. You have good verbal and writing skills in English.

You can establish strong professional relationships directly with relevant stakeholders and communicate with them at all levels. You understand wider business needs and find innovative solutions to complex problems. You can work proactively and systematically in a fast-changing business environment with a strong success focus. You have willingness to travel internationally.
