Thesis Project –Test Method for Drilling Tools

Sandvik Coromant is a global market-leading manufacturer of tools and tooling systems for advanced industrial metal cutting. Within this thesis project you will be using state-of-the-art technology to develop an efficient test method for hole making tools.

Background and scope of the project

An essential part in the development work of new tools is to evaluate their performance. Tool life of a drilling product is traditionally determined by successive drilling of holes until a stop criterion is met. This is both time and resource consuming. Within this thesis project you develop and evaluate an alternative and more efficient test method for this purpose, where the cutting geometry is subjected to a turning application rather than drilling.

Work description

In this thesis, you dive into the cutting edge of industrial metal cutting. You analyze the load conditions experienced by cutting geometries during drilling and translate those insights into a turning application that mimics the stress environment. You take charge of the theoretical groundwork, using FEM simulation software to model and validate your approach.

Once the concept is solid, you bring it to life. You design a custom tool holder in CAD that positions the cutting-edge geometry precisely for the turning test. You then program the lathe using CAM software to execute the tool life test – your design, your code, your experiment!

This is hands-on innovation. You don’t just study the problem – you engineer the solution!

The location for this thesis project is Sandviken, and we expect you to work as much as possible on-site to build networks and get good support from the organization!
