Master Thesis – Predictive Model for Mass Flow Controllers
At Sandvik Coromant, we offer you the possibility to do a Master of Science thesis in developing a detection model capable of identifying irregularities in real process data. The goal is to predict component failure within our equipment areas, chemical vapor deposition (CVD), physical vapor deposition (PVD), and sintering.
Welcome to a world leading, global industrial player who believes in taking a holistic approach to manufacturing, one that leads to healthy habits for the long term – we believe in manufacturing wellness!
Background and scope of the project
Mass Flow Controllers (MFC) are critical for precise gas delivery. Failures such as capillary or mainline clogging and valve output drift can lead to machine error rejections and unplanned downtime. Current maintenance is reactive, causing scrap and “big bang rejections”.
Work description
In this project, you build and evaluate a predictive model on current data outputs from mass flow control devices. You define future steps and recommend how we can implement AI for process equipment surveillance and what additional sensors or imaging that could be needed.
Included in your project:
- Assist production in feature extraction.
- Build a model that fits the situation (anomaly detection, root cause classification, remaining useful life estimation, supervised or unsupervised learning techniques.
- Model integration with IT/OT.
Your background
- Master studies in Automation/Production/Computer engineering, or similar.
- Skills and interest in information modeling, AI and programming.
- Insights into process equipment are beneficial.
- Insights into the metal cutting industry and processes are beneficial.
- Excellent communication skills in English and/or Swedish.
The thesis project is based at our Västberga site in Stockholm.
Our culture
Innovation is in our DNA and we’re proud to shape the future of manufacturing in close collaboration with our customers and partners.
