Systems Technician – Automation and Newtrax

Based: Orange, NSW or Milton, Brisbane

About the Opportunity

In this role, you will deliver technical support, commissioning, maintenance, and repair services for Sandvik’s AutoMine® and Newtrax automation, productivity, and collision avoidance systems across an established customer base. Working closely with customers at site, you will support the installation and commissioning of automation systems, analyse system performance, and diagnose complex technical issues to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operation of mining equipment.

You will act as a key technical link between customers and internal teams, ensuring automation-related issues are resolved efficiently, system performance is optimised, and customer confidence in Sandvik’s automation solutions remains high. This role suits someone who enjoys hands-on technical work in the field, applying strong diagnostic skills with a safety-first mindset, and contributing to solutions that enhance customer uptime, safety, and operational reliability.

Responsibilities:

  • Install, commission, maintain, and repair Sandvik AutoMine® and Newtrax automation, productivity, and collision avoidance systems across customer sites and Sandvik workshops, taking ownership from installation through to stable operation.
  • Deliver high-level technical support to customers, operators, and service personnel by diagnosing and resolving complex system and equipment issues in field-based environments.
  • Perform inspections, planned maintenance, and repairs on specialised mining equipment, including drill rigs, loaders, and trucks, to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operation.
  • Conduct systematic fault finding and failure analysis to identify root causes, implement corrective actions, and prevent recurring issues.
  • Support field trials, testing, and commissioning of new products, system upgrades, and updated components in collaboration with internal technical teams.
  • Engage closely with customers as a trusted technical advisor, ensuring clear communication, effective issue resolution, and strong ongoing system performance.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders, including Automation, Engineering, and Service teams, to share technical insights, support continuous improvement, and enhance product and service delivery.
  • Maintain strong technical knowledge of automation systems, networking, communication protocols, and applications to support informed troubleshooting and solution delivery.
  • Complete required reporting and documentation related to service activities, system performance, and compliance, while consistently aligning with Sandvik’s safety, quality, and ethical standards.

About you:

You are a technically skilled and safety-focused professional with demonstrated experience supporting electrical, mechanical, or automation systems within mining or heavy industrial environments. You have a strong understanding of equipment operation, system integration, and maintenance practices, and you are comfortable diagnosing and resolving complex technical issues both independently and in collaboration with others.

You build trusted relationships with customers and internal stakeholders through clear communication, professionalism, and a practical, solutions-focused approach. You are confident engaging directly with operators, supervisors, and technical teams, and you remain calm and methodical when working in high-pressure or challenging site environments.

You bring a proactive mindset, strong organisational skills, and the ability to manage your workload effectively in a dynamic, field-based role. You are digitally capable, comfortable working with IT systems, technical documentation, and remote support tools, and you are committed to working in line with Sandvik’s safety, quality, and ethical standards. Experience with automation systems, networking, and underground mining environments will be highly regarded.
