About the Opportunity
This role is responsible for protecting, strengthening and maximising the value of Sandvik’s innovations through the effective management of the full patent lifecycle, with a strong focus on Australian patent law and enforcement. Working closely with R&D teams, product specialists and business leaders, the role translates inventive concepts into robust patent rights that support Sandvik’s competitive advantage and long‑term market position. As part of Sandvik’s global patent function, the role collaborates across regions to deliver consistent, high‑quality intellectual property outcomes while enabling the effective enforcement of patent rights in Australia.
Responsibilities
- Operate in full compliance with Sandvik’s Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) Vision, policies and standards, actively promoting Zero Harm and ensuring health, safety and quality requirements are met across all activities.
- Act in alignment with the Sandvik Way, demonstrating organisational values while supporting business priorities and ethical decision‑making.
- Manage the full patent lifecycle, including invention capture, strategic evaluation, drafting, filing, prosecution and ongoing maintenance of patent assets.
- Lead the filing, prosecution and enforcement of patent rights in Australia, ensuring compliance with Australian patent law and alignment with Sandvik’s global IP strategy to protect market position.
- Partner closely with R&D teams, product experts and business leaders to identify, assess and protect inventions, providing practical and commercially focused IP advice to support technology development and business decisions.
- Conduct and support freedom‑to‑operate assessments, technology searches and patent landscape analyses to inform innovation, risk management and investment decisions.
- Collaborate with global patent colleagues and manage external patent attorneys and service providers to deliver consistent, high‑quality, timely and cost‑effective intellectual property outcomes, while contributing to continuous improvement of global patent processes.
About you
You are a qualified Patent Attorney with approximately 7–10 years’ experience in Australian patent law, supported by an advanced technical qualification (Master’s or PhD) in Engineering, ideally mechanical and/or mining‑related disciplines. You bring substantial hands‑on experience across the full patent lifecycle, including invention capture, drafting, prosecution, grant and enforcement, with proven capability handling complex technologies and contentious matters. You have strong working knowledge of Australian patent practice, complemented by exposure to international patent systems, particularly in the United States and Europe, and experience operating within a global environment. Your background includes involvement in patent enforcement and litigation matters in Australia, and you are recognised for clear, concise communication skills and the ability to engage effectively with both technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
