Master thesis: Optimizing stock levels of powder for additive manufacturing

Sandvik's division Additive Manufacturing offers a thesis project position within the area of optimization of stock levels for metal powder.

The market for 3D-printed products and the next generation of manufacturing technologies is developing rapidly and we see strong growth in this area. Metal powder is used as a raw material in these technologies which means that the demand is increasing and is expected to continue to grow for many years ahead.

Sandvik's division Additive Manufacturing has through its Osprey® metal powder a leading position in fine powder, mainly through our operations in the UK. In Sweden, we manufacture tailor-made powder alloys in nickel-based superalloys and titanium for some of the most demanding customers in the world. To further strengthen our leading position, we are expanding our operations in Sandviken, Sweden.

Background and scope of the project

To ensure consistent short delivery times for smaller volume orders we are going to set up a finished stock holding with standard products. The aim is to automate the stock replenishment of our products held in stock as they are consumed.

Work description

Optimize the service offerings and supply chain efficiency related to metal powder stock program, including, for example:

  • Identification and calculation of optimal stock size for about 8–10 predefined products.
  • Calculation of optimal re-order quantities by product.
  • Preparation for an automated manufacturing order in ERP-system to refill the stock.

Student background

We are looking for a student in, preferably, Mechanical Engineering or Industrial and Management Engineering with an interest and skills in operations management, planning of production systems and stock control, or supply chain management.

The thesis project lasts 20 weeks, starting as soon as possible. The position is placed in Sandviken, Sweden.
