Master thesis: Evaluation of new powder grade for furnace control pieces in sintering process

Sandvik Coromant in Gimo, Sweden offers a master thesis project within powder production and the sintering process.

Sandvik Coromant in Gimo is a world leader in the manufacture of cemented carbide tools for turning, milling and drilling in metallic materials. With around 1500 employees, it is also Uppsala County's largest private employer.

The production in Gimo is divided into two factories, one for the manufacture of cemented carbide inserts and one for tool holders. Both factories are world leaders in their respective field and an example of this is that the tool factory was recognized as one of the world's 16 'Lighthouse' manufacturers by the World Economic Forum in 2019.

Our biggest customers are the metal, automotive and aerospace industries, and we aim to meet the market's increased demands for new products with precision and durability.

Background and scope of the project

Sandvik Coromant uses furnace control pieces (FCP) to evaluate the status of the furnace. The FCP´s are compactions of cemented carbide, from the same powder batch and geometry. Deviations in magnetic properties may indicate problems with temperature control, insulation, gas flow, etc. The FCP also show differences between furnaces. The powder grade used in the furnace control today is stable and not very sensitive to small variations during a run.

The scope of the project is to evaluate possible new powder grades to be used. It also includes the evaluation of alternative methods to supervise and follow the status of the sintering process.

Work description

  • Design and plan tests to evaluate new powder grades for FCP´s.
  • Design and plan tests to evaluate alternative placing for FCP´s in the furnace.
  • Design and plan tests to evaluate the handling of FCP´s (storage, logistics etc.).
  • Study of literature to get a good understanding of sintering process, powder properties and the function of the furnaces.
  • Evaluate historic order data.

The work will be performed at Sandvik Coromant in Gimo, Sweden. Dependent of the regulations because of the pandemic, some work may have to be done at home.

Student background

Master students in engineering, with a great interest in materials science and manufacturing, are suitable for this position. Preferably, you are curious, independent and willing to cooperate with many different people within production departments and research and development departments.

We actively work to create a workplace that is characterized by diversity and inclusion.

The thesis project consists of 30 credits and lasts 20 weeks, starting first quarter of 2021.
