Master Thesis: Digital twin of foundry process

Sandvik Mining and Rock Technology, a business area within the Sandvik Group, offers a thesis project in the area of production process optimization.

Business area Sandvik Mining and Rock Technology is a leading supplier in equipment and tools, service and technical solutions for the mining and construction industries. Application areas include, for example, rock drilling, rock cutting, rock crushing, loading and hauling, and materials handling.

The focus lies on bringing value to customers through high-performing products that increase productivity and safety as well as to provide services and flexible maintenance programs that extend uptime and cut costs.

Background and purpose

The site in Svedala, Sweden is Sandvik's global competence center for stone crushing and screening equipment. The site has about 450 employees and covers the whole business, from management, R&D and production to marketing, sales and aftermarket services.

The foundry process, a vital part in the production of crushers, has many dependencies that make the production planning difficult. Today, the planning is done manually based on the experience of individual employees, something that creates losses in the production follow-up. The purpose of this thesis project is to make a simulation model of the production flow which could be used to optimize the output and simulate how changes affect the process.
