Thesis project - Development of the safety process in production units

Sandvik's division Rock Tools offers a thesis project within the EHS (Environment, Health and Safety) area with focus on workplace safety in two production units. The position is placed in Sandviken, Sweden.

Background and scope

Workplace safety is of highest priority within Sandvik. Rock Tools, a division within business area Sandvik Mining and Rock Technolgy, has set a target to eliminate serious accidents. One of the actions taken within the division is to start a project regarding the analysis of workplace hazards and injuries.

We have seen a deviating pattern in our reporting of hazards and incidents at the Rock Tools division's production units in Sandviken, Sweden and Patancheru, India. The target of this thesis project is to analyze the reported hazards and incidents and the related actions taken to decide whether the results are of good quality.

We expect that you, at the end of the project, have solutions for an improved process for the reporting of hazards and incidents as well as for how we can increase the quality of our actions.

Work description

  1. Analyze the reported hazards, near misses, injuries and the risk register. Are they related to each other?
  2. Analyze the quality of the actions taken and the effect of them.
  3. Analyze the quality of the investigations from the incidents.
  4. Propose improvement in the safety process.

Student background

For this project, we are looking for someone studying Safety, Environment or HR (Human Resources).

You must have computer skills, a good level in both English and Swedish as you will analyze texts in both languages. You need to be able to visit our production unit in Patancheru, India.

The thesis project lasts 10 weeks full time or 20 weeks half time, starting during Q1 2020.

You will be placed in Sandviken, Sweden, except for approximately one week when you will be at the production unit in Patancheru, India
