Master thesis: Analysis of process parameters influencing surfaces of duplex stainless steel alloys

Business area Sandvik Materials Technology offers a Master thesis in its Tube division where tube and pipe in advanced stainless steels and special alloys are manufactured. The work will be carried out at the R&D department with close collaboration with the production departments.

Background and purpose

We want to develop a deeper understanding of how the previous process steps in the production of duplex stainless steel effect the effort needed to get the tube surfaces clean after extrusion.

We have not been able to relate all the differences to the pickling /cleaning step and want to make a bigger investigation of which parameters can be correlated with the differences we sometimes experience. This includes processes like, for example, extrusion and pickling, and parameters like temperatures, concentrations and material composition.

Description

In this thesis project you should collect process and material data and determine the most important factors for the final surface appearance.

The work includes:

  • Planning and designing the study

  • Collect information from different sources

  • Make some material analysis, for example, microstructure analysis

  • Use multivariate data analysis, like the software SIMCA, to analyze the importance of the process parameters

Your profile

Master students in materials chemistry, material physics or similar, preferable with experience of multivariate data analysis, are suitable for this position.

Duration

The work consists of 30 credits, 20 weeks and is planned to start in the autumn of 2020. The position is placed in Sandviken, Sweden.
