Marianne Grauers and Kinna Brundin

Engineering has the potential to change the world is an expression that feels more true than ever when describing Engineers Without Borders. Marianne Grauers is committed to the cause of using technology and engineering skills to improve the situation in rural and poor areas of the world. Her story is truly fascinating.

As Vice President for Engineers Without Borders, Marianne Grauers has been part of a school project in Mavuno in Tanzania for several years. This is a project that gives young girls the opportunity to attend school and prepare for university studies.

”Mavuno is a boarding school and it gives poor or orphan girls an education that they would not get otherwise. Today, it is a four-year school, but we are working towards making it a six-year program to fully prepare the students for university. The school is top-ranked amongst all schools in Tanzania”, says Marianne.

Kinna Brundin is the Global Event and Partnership Manager at Sandvik, responsible for, amongst other things, the community involvement initiatives from Sandvik Group where Engineers Without Borders is one of the key partnerships. She visited the Mavuno project in September 2022 and is impressed by the progress at the school.

”Mavuno is in a very rural area but the technology advancements that are made are inspiring. For example, Sandvik and Engineers Without Borders has contributed to creating a computer lab, sanitation facilities, and solar panels for electricity. It’s also important to point out that much of the work and the maintenance of the installments are made by the local community, which is a success factor for both Mawuno and for community involvement initiatives overall. It felt great to see how proud everyone was of their school.” says Kinna
