Evan Larrick, electro-mechanical engineer

Evan Larrick sees engineering as key to sustainability, his particular passion. After he participated in the Sandvik Global Graduate program he got the chance to work with the future of mining, fully electric mining equipment. “Engineering is like solving puzzles all the time, there are little things you can improve and there are big things you can improve. Engineering takes what was once impossible and makes it possible and I really like that”, he says.

Ten people from five countries participate in the Sandvik Global Graduate programs that runs for 15 months. Evan Larrick spent his first rotation in the US and was supposed to spend the second one at the Kanthal division in Sweden, but due to the Covid-19 pandemic it had to be from a distance. The third rotation took place at Artisan, a Sandvik business unit that specializes in electric battery mining equipment and is sometimes referred to as the Tesla of mining.

“I think it’s the future of energy usage. We are always going to be mining for metals, so why not do it in the cleanest, safest, most efficient way? When I show up at work, I feel I’m doing my part in replacing old ways of working with newer, safer ways”.

After having studied applied physics and mechanical engineering at university, his work at Artisan is more hands on.

“I realized I actually like to physically see the things I’m working on, being able to go into the shop and touch the machine, see the components that goes into it and watch it being built. Being able to try out new jobs has solidified that I actually like engineering.”
