Master Thesis: System and technology integration of manufacturing software

Sandvik Coromant offers a master thesis project within the area of Advanced Planning. The location for this thesis project is Sandviken or Västberga (Stockholm), Sweden.

Sandvik Coromant, a division within the Sandvik Group, is a world-leading manufacturer of tools and tooling systems for industrial metal cutting. The offering also includes, for example, solutions for digital manufacturing and logistics as well as productivity improvement programs. Our customers are found in the metal processing, automotive and aircraft industries, and our aim is to meet the markets' more stringent demands for new precision products with great durability.

Integration technology is very important for digital products today in a highly collaborative world. It enables every single module developed independently and assembled modules working properly as designed. The generic technology needs large amount of work to adopt to a specific task, and it can’t well and directly solve integration problem in all applications, e.g. integration related to CAM software. Therefore, this project is focused on the integration technology of CAM software and our tool path application.

Background and scope of the project

At Sandvik Coromant, we have been engaging in digital world for many years, and we have digital products available on the market. We are striving to extend our developments and our product to different CAM software to make them easily accessed.

This thesis project is to find a method to integrate our tool path applications with CAM software, to be able to extend the built-in knowledge to new CAM software with minimal effort.

Work description

The main theme of the thesis is the development of integration technology between a CAM software and our cloud-based tool path core. It should contain the following steps:

  1. Determination of the architecture of the integration.
  2. Collection of the needed information in CAM software in a manual and automatic combined manner.
  3. Transformation and conversion of the collected information for API to communicate with our tool path application.
  4. After obtaining response from the tool path application, convert and transform the data from the response to make CAM software read and visualized.

In addition, a prototype of the above development should be delivered. The development should be as generic as possible.

Student background

We are looking for one or two students who study computer science, mechanical engineering, or similar, or those who have interests in the following topics:

  • Object oriented programming, preferably in C#
  • API knowledge of software
  • 3D visualization and modelling
  • Basic knowledge of CAM

Communication skills in English is mandatory.
