Thesis project: Rainwater collection to minimize risk and the use of resources

Sandvik Materials Technology, a business area within the Sandvik Group, offers a thesis project in the area of finding ways to collect and use rainwater at the site in Sandviken, Sweden.

Background and purpose

To achieve this, we are focusing on four sustainability goals for 2030.

One of the development areas identified at Sandvik Materials Technology's site in Sandviken, Sweden is how to handle the water supply to adapt to climate change. We have identified that we need solutions for how to handle big amounts of rainwater that comes down in a short time as well as how to handle long periods without rain.

Work description

In this thesis project you will look into the possibility of how we can collect and use rainwater at the site in Sandviken. We want you to find the answers to, for example:

  • How collected rainwater could be used in the production.
  • If there are any obstacles (legal or other) for collecting huge amounts of rainwater.
  • What is the most suitable and efficient way to collect rainwater and how would the different alternatives affect the already existing cooling water system.
  • The possible need for more weather stations as well as more measuring points for surrounding factors such as temperature and insolation.

Your profile

This thesis project can be done by two students, in parallel or at separate times. We are looking for Bachelor's or Master's students in the area of, for example, environmental engineering or sustainable technology.

Communication skills in Swedish, both in speech and in writing, are important for this project.


The thesis project lasts 20 + 10 weeks and is planned to start during the fourth quarter of 2020. The position is placed in Sandviken, Sweden.
