Master Thesis: Investigation of production processes for hard materials for rock excavation

Business area Sandvik Mining and Rock Technology is a leading supplier in equipment and tools, service and technical solutions for the mining and construction industries. Application areas include, for example, rock drilling, rock cutting, rock crushing, loading and hauling, and materials handling.
The focus lies on bringing value to customers through high-performing products that increase productivity and safety as well as to provide services and flexible maintenance programs that extend uptime and cut costs.
Background and purpose
The site in Västberga (Stockholm), Sweden, is center for the research and development as well as the production of hard material for use in drill bits and rotating heads for rock excavation. The site is home to around 450 Sandvik employees, of which approximately 80 work for the business area Sandvik Mining and Rock Technology.
The purpose of this thesis project is to investigate selected production processes for hard materials, in particular cemented carbide, to increase the understanding of the influence of process parameters on the resulting materials.
The work will comprise literature studies, planning and performance of practical experimental work within hard metal processing as well as analysis and theoretical explanation of the results. The main part of the work will consist of experimental activities.
The thesis project duration corresponds to 30 university credits and is planned to start in the third quarter of 2020.
The location for this position is Västberga (Stockholm), Sweden.
