Master thesis: Investigation of induction heating on shrink fitting processes during rock drill bit production

Sandvik's division Rock Tools, part of business area Sandvik Mining and Rock Solutions, offers a thesis project within the area of induction heating in drill bit production.

Background and scope

Sandvik is a leading supplier of equipment and tools, service and technical solutions for the mining and construction industries. The division Rock Tools in Sandviken, Sweden has about 500 employees and is Sandvik's main unit for the development and manufacturing of rock drill tools. One of the products manufactured at the unit is drill bits which is the part of the drill string that is in contact with the rock during drilling.

In the manufacturing of rock drill bits, hard metal inserts are shrink fitted into steel bodies using induction heating. Induction heating parameters used during shrink fitting significantly influence the quality and performance of drill bits.

Work description

The overall task is to investigate different types of induction coil layouts and process parameters and their effect on product quality. This will be achieved by practical trials in production and laboratory environment. It will be conducted by, for example, mapping hardness, measuring distortion and temperature, or using other relevant methods for examining product characteristics.

Student background

For this project, we are looking for a master's student in mechanical engineering or materials science.

We actively work to create a workplace that is characterized by diversity and inclusion.

Duration of project

The project has a scope that will encompass 30 credits, corresponding to 20 weeks full-time studies and is planned to start in January 2022. The location is in Sandviken, Sweden.
