Master thesis: Interpolated insert ER-brushing

Sandvik Coromant in Gimo is a world leader in the manufacture of cemented carbide tools for turning, milling and drilling in metallic materials. With around 1500 employees, it is also Uppsala County's largest private employer.
The production in Gimo is divided into two factories, one for the manufacture of cemented carbide inserts and one for tool holders. Both factories are world leaders in their respective field and an example of this is that the tool factory was recognized as one of the world's 16 'Lighthouse' manufacturers by the World Economic Forum in 2019.
Our biggest customers are the metal, automotive and aerospace industries, and we aim to meet the market's increased demands for new products with precision and durability.
Background and scope of the project
Cemented carbide is a very hard, but also brittle material. Metal-cutting tools are often made of cemented carbide, due to its wear resistance and because it enables high productivity. Though, to reach this long-lasting behavior, the cutting edge cannot be made too sharp, it needs a small rounding, an edge reinforcement (ER). Otherwise it would break. The manufacturing of cemented carbide inserts includes several production steps, whereof the ER-operation is one.
One method to make ER is to brush the tool/insert with a rotating abrasive cylindrical brush. Traditionally, the workpiece is then passing through the brush while rotating around its center line. This is a very rational method, but the possibilities to control the shape and size of the ER on a micro level is, to some extent, limited. If the latest CAD/CAM technologies are used together with a new generation of brushes in a high-precision 5-axis machining center, new possibilities to control the ER process open up.
This thesis project aims to investigate the potential of introducing a new production method for making high-precision ER on coming generations of cemented carbide inserts. The scope of this thesis work is to develop, evaluate, improve and document a new production method of making brushed ER on carbide inserts.
The work shall start with a planning phase including a literature study, defining the problem and making a project plan for the practical tests. A realistic test plan will be an essential part of the project plan as the number of parameters are many and the available time is limited. After the practical test has been performed, in one or more loops, the work shall be summarized in a thesis report and a presentation of the work shall be made on site.
An appropriate background is mechanical engineering with competence in CAD/CAM and experience working with CNC-machines.
