Master thesis: Increased growth rate of CVD coating

Sandvik Coromant in Gimo, Sweden offers a thesis project within the area of CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition) coating of cemented carbide inserts.

Introduction

The insert manufacturing plant in Gimo, Sweden is the largest facility within Sandvik Coromant for the manufacturing of cemented carbide inserts with its around 800 employees. This project will be executed at the production site in Gimo and more specifically at the CVD Coating Department, which produces ceramic coatings through CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition) on the cemented carbide inserts.

The coating gives a substantial increase in both the performance and service life of the inserts during machining, and each product family has its own custom-made solution. The CVD process involves chemical reactions at the surface of the cemented carbide inserts, with reactive gases and high temperatures.

Background and scope of the project

The current CVD processes can be long, up to a day, which entails a large production cost while it also risks forming a bottleneck situation in the production flow.

The purpose of this master thesis project is to investigate the possibility to optimize the growth rate of a part of the CVD coating. An increased growth rate of the coating could increase productivity and it also has the potential to guide research and development of future CVD processes.

Work description

This work will give you the possibility to investigate the effect of gas composition in the CVD process. The project is a collaboration with our R&D department and the production in Gimo. Therefore, you will have close contact with both departments and be offered a good insight into the road from hypothesis to finished product within this part of the engineering industry. More specifically, the project will among several things include:

  • Taking part of earlier work, trials, and experiments.
  • Construct a test plan for your own trials and experiments.
  • Executing said trials and experiments in collaboration with production.
  • Material characterization in SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope), as well as light optical microscopy.
  • Measurement of the CVD coating’s crystallographic orientation with XRD.

Student background

Master student in science or engineering with specialization towards either chemistry, materials science or materials engineering. You should be eligible to start your master thesis project at the start of the spring term of 2022. Earlier experience from the process industry and thin-film technology is meritorious, but not a necessity. As we operate in an international environment, good verbal and written language skills in English are required.

Duration of project

The project has a scope that will encompass 30 credits, corresponding to 20 weeks full-time studies. The work is expected to start in the middle of January 2022. Location is at Sandvik Coromant in Gimo. Large parts of the project will need presence on-site with tests in production, as well as analysis and evaluation of the results.
