Bachelor thesis: Impact of different green body brushing patterns on insert quality

Our customers are found in the metal processing, automotive and aircraft industries, and our aim is to meet the markets' more stringent demands for new precision products with great durability.
The tools production in Gimo is the largest production unit for tools for turning, milling and drilling in Sandvik Coromant. Our ambition is to be recognized as the world’s best production plant in this category. The Gimo production unit has recently started a project prestudy on developing an automated solution for brushing unsintered insert blanks removing the edge flash from pressing.
Background and scope of the project
The unsintered pressed blanks, called green bodies, have historically been brushed by hand, which is time-consuming, operator-dependent and unhealthy. Therefore, Sandvik recently started a project developing an automated solution using a collaborative robot that removes the edge flash by brushing, which improves edge quality and minimizes the risk of damage during the top and bottom grinding.
Your assignment is to develop and understand the fundamentals of the brushing itself. Find the common grounds and find out what brushing patterns are optimal for the different geometries.
Working together with the pressing and grinding department to understand the impact on how different brushing patterns can improve insert edge quality.
The work shall start with a planning phase including a literature study involving other production units, defining possible problems, and making a project plan for the practical tests. A realistic test plan will be an essential part of the project plan as the number of parameters are many and the available time is limited. After the practical test has been performed, in one or more loops, the work shall be summarized in a thesis report and a presentation of the work shall be made on site.
Bachelor’s program in mechanical engineering, material science or equivalent. Preferably basic competence of CAD/CAM and some experience working with robotics. Fluent in both verbal and written Swedish and English.

Duration of project
