Master Thesis: Evaluation of a machine component life estimation model
Sandvik Rock Processing Solutions, a business area within the Sandvik Group, offers a thesis project in the area of the estimation of machine component life.
Within Sandvik Group, we’re passionate about development and advanced technology, and we always aim to offer the best possible experience for our customers.
Sandvik Rock Processing Solution is a growth-oriented and customer-centric business area and a place of inclusive collaboration, agility and innovation. We nurture an ever-growing portfolio of products and solutions based on the needs of the market, and where pioneering software technology meets the core of manufacturing.
Background and scope of the project
Following the business trends in the markets, many manufacturing companies have in recent years undergone, or are undergoing, a business transformation. From traditionally having had a “product-focused” business model, many manufacturers have transferred into a “service-oriented” business model – with some even transitioning towards a “performance-oriented” business model.
In preparing for a business with a more performance-based contracting approach (example: think Rolls-Royce’s “power-by-the-hour”), one crucial thing is the ability to estimate the service life of different machine components based on operating conditions as well as site conditions.
The scope of this thesis project is to evaluate the model developed to estimate the service life of different machine components and to improve the model. The aim is to evaluate the model by using collected data, to examine the discrepancies between model and data, and to suggest and implement improvements.
We expect the work to be done independently, but with of course the combined support from the university and Sandvik. This project is part of our development of future tools as the markets move towards a more performance-based contracting approach.
The collected data used for the project is in Sharepoint, so the analyses can be done by using e.g. PowerBI and/or Excel.
We are preferably looking for a master’s student in engineering or mathematics with an interest and some experience of statistics and modeling.
While the project is not related directly to production and quality, we believe that an understanding of how production and quality can be affected by internal as well as external parameters is advantageous. Understanding some mechanics is also advantageous.
At Sandvik, we believe that diversity of experience, perspective and background leads to a better environment for our employees, our business and our customers. Now, we’re looking forward to meeting you!
Duration of project
The thesis project is expected to last 20 weeks, starting December 13, 2021 or according to a mutually agreed starting date.
The location for this thesis project is flexible. However, some travel to our head office in Svedala – just outside of Malmö, will be needed. If you are already living in Skåne, that is preferred.
Please note that we, unfortunately, do not have the possibility to support you with accommodation in Svedala for long-term stay.
