Master thesis: Evaluating the use of revert material in the production of powder for use in additive manufacturing

Sandvik's division Additive Manufacturing offers a thesis project position within the area of the production of metal powder for additive manufacturing.

The market for 3D-printed products and the next generation of manufacturing technologies is developing rapidly and we see strong growth in this area. Metal powder is used as a raw material in these technologies which means that the demand is increasing and is expected to continue to grow for many years ahead.

Sandvik's division Additive Manufacturing has through its Osprey® metal powder a leading position in fine powder (with a grain size ranging from 500 to 15 µm), mainly through our operations in the UK. In Sweden, we manufacture tailor-made powder alloys in nickel-based superalloys and titanium for some of the most demanding customers in the world.

Background and scope of the project

To further improve yield in powder production, the use of revert powder in melting should be evaluated for standard products. The aim is to evaluate the effect on melting and atomization performance as well as powder properties.

Work description

  • Set up a and conduct test plan together with metal powder production.

  • Evaluate the powder properties, including metallurgy.

  • Establish and develop a standard operating procedure for the use of revert powder, if applicable.

Student background

We are looking for a student with a background in material science or chemistry doing a master's degree. Fluency in written and spoken English is a pre-requisite for this opportunity.

The thesis project lasts 20 weeks, starting as soon as possible. The project will require some physical presence in Sandviken, Sweden. Visits will be conducted in a COVID-19 secure manner, in line with recommendations. There will also be the opportunity to contribute via distance working, when practical.
