Sandvik Coromant in Gimo, Sweden offers a thesis project within the area of dimensional variation in automated fixtures in 5-axis machining.
Sandvik Coromant in Gimo, Sweden, with approximately 1,300 employees, is a world leader in the manufacture of cemented carbide tools for machining metallic materials. Our customers are found in the metal processing, automotive and aircraft industries, and our aim is to meet the markets' more stringent demands for new precision products with great durability.
The tools production in Gimo is the largest production unit for tools for turning, milling and drilling in Sandvik Coromant. At Gimo we use automated, multi-axis CNC machine centres, where up to 2 machines and 1-2 robots form a cell (cell automation). The purpose of this project is to analyze dimensional variation in automated fixtures in a 5-axis machining centre cell.
Background and scope of the project
For several years, Sandvik Coromant in Gimo has worked towards minimizing the internal set-up times in our machine cells. Our solution has been based on a standardized interface within the cell, where the automation equipment pairs and loads our products into the machine using both a modular pallet system with a flexible fixture solution. With this setup, we have managed to manufacture a large assortment of tool holders with a minimal internal set-up.
These cells give us the opportunity to conduct unmanned production of tool holders, which is a success factor for manufacturing in Sweden, but it places great demands on high process stability and availability.
We work daily with continuous improvements within our processes and our systems. We have developed good methods for checking the condition of our machines and products, but we do not have the same control of our fixturing system. To improve this knowledge gap, we are now looking for 1-2 students who will be commissioned to analyze how much impact the fixturing system has on the products’ dimensional variation.
We would like the student(s) to propose and implement measures to improve this.
- Theoretical study concerning effective set-up using the SMED (Single Minute Exchange of Die) method.
- Analysis of how different factors affect the position of the blank products in the machine. Eg. the impact of different fixtures, machines and positions within the process.
- Examination of repetition accuracy when loading in numerous machines.
- Analyse the data to discover which factors affect the dimensional variation.
- Present proposals for method improvements in order to optimize the conditions for production.
Delimitation: Square holder production at Gimo tools production.
The results of the project must be compiled in a written report and presented orally at a presentation.
Bachelor’s program in mechanical engineering. Fluent in both written and verbal Swedish and English.

Duration of project
The thesis project lasts 10 weeks, starting in March 2022. The location is in Gimo, Sweden.
