Hazmat Specialist

Sandvik Mining & Rock Technology, the leading global supplier of equipment and tools, service, and technical solutions for the mining industry, currently has an opening for a Hazmat Specialist.

We have an opportunity for a Hazmat Specialiston our Mid shift (10:00AM- 7:30PM) at our warehouse in Romeoville IL. We are seeking a hands-on and results driven leader that will partner with management to foster a collaborative team environment in a customer focused oriented culture.

Ensure all incoming, outgoing, and storage of hazardous materials are compliant with all regulations, documentation, and packaging for their mode of transport. As a Hazmat Specialist, you are responsible for staying updated on new regulations and changes to existing policies that could impact packaging, labeling, and marking of dangerous goods shipments. You must proactively monitor regulatory updates, assess their relevance to our organization, and implement necessary changes to procedures to maintain a safe and compliant shipping and receiving operational environment.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Adheres to all Sandvik policies, SOPs, safety, and environmental practices
  • Uses correct tools and materials safely in executing operational processes and inspections e.g. MHE
  • Responsible for shipments of dangerous goods in all modes of transport domestically and internationally.
  • Compliant packaging, labeling, and marking of dangerous goods shipments.
  • Creation of All Necessary Dangerous Goods Shipping Paperwork (BOLs/SLIs / Dangerous Goods Declarations)
  • Troubleshooting all delays and inspection issues with dangerous goods shipments to ensure the shipments are expedited to customers and any issues needing corrections to paperwork and packaging are handled promptly to minimize delays in hazardous goods shipments.
  • Responsible for site dangerous goods databases and keeping them up to date with current information and documents (SDS Sheets, UN Label Templates, etc.)
  • Ensuring all dangerous goods shipment paperwork copies are archived as required by regulations (2 years from current date – All dangerous goods shipment paperwork on file).
  • Responsible for keeping adequate stock of necessary Dangerous Goods Shipping Supplies.
  • Ensure hazardous shipments outbound KPIs and departure schedules
  • Conduct regular inspections of dangerous goods storage areas
  • Ensure dangerous goods storage areas are maintained to the highest quality
  • Inspection of incoming dangerous goods
  • Support other Sandvik sites for dangerous goods shipment guidance
  • Follow instructions by leadership
  • Labor share throughout facility
  • Participates in continuous improvement projects
  • Warehouse administration and housekeeping
  • Engage in cross-training, labor sharing and collaborate on tasks as required
  • Other duties as assigned due to business needs

EXPERIENCE

  • 4+ years’ experience in Warehousing/ Distribution/ Supply Chain environment.
  • 1+ years of hands-on Dangerous Goods shipping/paperwork experience

EDUCATION, LICENCES & CERTIFICATES

High School or equivalent experience. Post-secondary education/training in business or supply chain discipline would be of advantage.

Hazardous Shipping Certifications (Some can be obtained after starting the role)

  • Current DOT Hazardous Materials Shipper Certification
  • IATA Dangerous Goods Air Shipper Certification
  • IMDG Dangerous Goods Boat Shipper Certification
  • Lithium Battery Shippers Certification

OTHER:

  • Desirable English Proficiency: Intermediate (CEFR B1/ Completed EF level 6)
  • Organization Contribution: Operational controls, Warehouse efficiency, Warehouse improvement, Performance management
  • KPIS: LTIFR, Waste circulation, EHS Plan completion, Incident & hazard closeout, General Safety targets, Warehouse operational efficiency (customer satisfaction and % of adherence to timelines), Process efficiency, Process maturity, Project Management KPIs
