Senior Systems Engineer
Job Summary:
Develops advanced complex electrical & electro-mechanical systems, wiring harnesses, cables and power distribution systems for new vehicle prototypes. This includes all aspects of system and harness design from system layout to vehicle commissioning. Maintains and improves existing wire harnesses through continuous improvement efforts and change management. The
work will be predominantly intellectual and varied in nature and will require independent judgment and discretion, as well as technical leadership skills.
Education Level:
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or similar discipline required
Job Experience:
A minimum of seven (7) to ten (10) years of experience as a systems engineer, preferably in mobile equipment application
A minimum of five (5+) years’ experience in wire harness design needed
Experience in a technical leadership role (lead engineer or equivalent) beneficial
Skills/Special Training Required to Effectively Perform the Job:
Hands-on experience with all aspects of wire harness design (schematics, wire and fuse selection and sizing, terminal selection, 2D drawings, BOMs, etc.)
Ability to read, analyze and create schematics as well as electrical engineering drawings
Demonstrated proficiency in using wire harness design tools like Solidworks Electrical and/or Zuken E3.Series
Strong knowledge of electrical & electronic design, CAN network design, EMI & EMC etc. management systems
Solid background in vehicle systems development including powertrain control & battery
Demonstrated experience in system analysis, testing, troubleshooting, diagnostics and root cause analysis
Proficient in the use of test equipment including oscilloscopes, power supplies, digital multimeter, CAN tools, etc.
Hands-on experience with crimping, soldering, wire cutting/stripping, terminal extraction
Basic skills in 3D CAD systems (Solidworks) beneficial
Proficient in the use of MS Excel, Word, Powerpoint and related software
Responsibilities:
Ownership of vehicle harnesses and power distribution systems for prototype vehicles
Understand and document functionality of each subsystem contained in a vehicle as it pertains to wiring and power distribution
Lend system knowledge and expertise to help with component selection for each subsystem
Create harness topologies, CAN architecture layouts, fuse and relay box layouts, etc.
Create, organize and maintain device lists to support wire harness development
Gather and document all electrical information relevant to wire harness development for each device
Decide various control units’ pinouts based on datasheets and other supporting documentation
Create wire harness schematics based on required pinouts, considering safety and other regulatory requirements
Create wire cut lists, harness BOMs, flattened 2D drawings, incl. release of these documents into a PLM system
Provide guidance to manufacturing on required crimp tools for harness builds, as needed
Provide wiring harness expertise to production team during proto type assembly
Planning, preparing, and completing testing procedures incl. documentation for vehicle commissioning
Troubleshoot and repair wire harnesses during vehicle commissioning as needed
Redline vehicle schematics and drawings during prototype builds and ensure design documents get updated with lessons learned before next prototype build
Create test and troubleshooting procedures for production and field support teams
Support field support teams with troubleshooting and root causing efforts as necessary
Assist with creation of rework instructions and/or change requests based on customer feedback and needs and wiring harnesses / low voltage cabling
Design improvements, testing and other development work related to electrical systems
Work as a member of an integrated, interdisciplinary product team to examine, discuss, and develop solutions to difficult/complex issues with both internal and external stakeholders (customers, suppliers, internal management, etc.)
Ensure that designs and documentation of components and systems meet specified technical customer demands, product safety, legislative requirements and internal demands
Contribute to overall profitability related to component design and continuous improvements on new and existing products
Provide technical guidance and mentorship to more junior engineers
Perform other related duties as assigned by Management
