Master Thesis: Data and Information processing for Coromant Production Digital Platform

Are you a data science enthusiast with a passion for turning raw information into actionable insights through hands-on programming and software engineering? Look no further! Sandvik Coromant, a global leader in manufacturing tools and machining solutions, is seeking a person for carrying out a future-looking Master Thesis as part of your Master of Science degree.

We offer you a global arena filled with competent and innovative colleagues where you and your Master Thesis work is part of our data-driven initiatives across the global organization. An excellent place to grow and learn. We’re eager to meet you!

Background and scope of the project

The integration of big data analytics and the Internet of Things (IoT) has become essential for optimizing industrial processes, reducing energy consumption, and improving sustainability. This thesis delves into several state-of-the-art challenges of hands-on implementations of Apache Spark and Microsoft IoT Operations into an existing OT production process prototype environment deployed by Sandvik Coromant. Parts of the thesis includes systems architecture, design and development, implementation, and integration into an existing software environment, analyzing features and comparing the different implemented solutions.

Work description

Planned scope:

  • Installation and deployment of Apache Spark and Microsoft Azure IoT operations in already available and deployed prototype environment.
  • Configuration of data management parameters to get data from existing data sources into the Apache Spark and Microsoft Azure IoT operations components.
  • Implementation of new algorithms based on existing logic and implementation.
  • Implementation of storage parameters and interface to existing database.
  • Verification of implementation using existing use-cases.
  • Description of pros and cons versus the current existing implementation.
  • Description of new functionalities that are available after above implementation.

Student background

This Master Thesis is mainly directed towards Master of Science in Systems Science, Computer Science, Data Science, Information Technology, and Engineering Physics with Applied Numerical Analysis.

At Sandvik, we believe that diversity of experience, perspective, and background leads to a better environment for our employees, our business, and our customers. Now, we’re looking forward to meeting you!

Duration of project

The Master Thesis work will be carried out full-time for 20 weeks and work can be done remotely with at least three trips for face-to-face meetings in Gimo, Sweden.
