Master Thesis: Recreation Area Design
Sandvik Mining and Rock solutions in Sandviken is making the shift and advancing the world through transition to net zero carbon emissions. We’re also focused on protecting and regenerating nature and biodiversity as well as conserving water.
We want to be a positive force in shaping the industries of the future – using our expertise to solve the great challenges of our time. Leading the way with innovation and engineering for the world we need. Sandvik is committed to set targets in line with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), consistent with the Paris Climate Agreement to keep global warming below 1.5° C.
Background and purpose
As we transition to net zero climate changes, we affect our work environment – especially from rain and increased temperatures. Trees and green areas are one way to reduce the impact of a warmer climate, and as a bonus effect, parks and forests also have a positive effect on our mental well-being. The purpose of this assignment is to present a design as a contribution to biodiversity as well as an area where the employees can meet and recharge their well-being.
Work description
Within the premises of Rock Tool Site in Sandviken there’s today an area with some birch trees and grass (approx. 120 m2). Your assignment is, after visiting the area, to present a solution for design and content based on following:
- Safety: As the area is in connection to traffic, some form of barrier towards the road is needed.
- Adoption to climate change: Based on science, make a design that is most efficient in protecting both the site, but also the people in the area from increased temperatures.
- Biodiversity: Present a plan that meets the needs of the insects in this climate zone.
- Wellbeing: Design to encourage walk-and-talk meetings as well as a mindfulness zone.
- Recycling: We have a lot of materials and constructions that can be used in the design.
Location is Sandviken and remote work can be accepted at times.
