Climate
Sandvik DD422iE™ drill rig is one example of electric equipment reducing the environmental impacts of drilling and tunneling operations.
We will deliver on our commitments to reduce impact on the climate. We are aiming to shift mindsets and outcomes in our own business, for our customers and with our suppliers to help reach our targets.
Our goal:
Halve the CO2 impact
Targets
Customers
- CO2 improvement part of all product development projects
- Value proposition to our customers shall always include verified CO2 reduction potential
Operations
- Halve the CO2 foot print from our own production
- Halve the CO2 foot print for transportation of people and products
Suppliers
- Require halving of CO2 foot print from our key suppliers
We have five enablers to reach our goals and targets.
How we progress
CO2 emissions
Graph information
Left axis: Carbon emissions in thousand tons. Each bar represents the quarterly outcome. The bar is stacked and the split is to illustrate the share of direct and indirect carbon emissions.
Right axis: The line shows Total CO2 emissions in thousand tons, and the values are ‘annualized’, meaning that each data point is the sum of the last four quarters. The line is shown against the scale on the right-hand side.
Direct carbon emission: Emission from combustion of fossil fuels in owned or controlled sources, for example, vehicle fuels and fuel in furnaces. Also known as Scope 1 emission.
Indirect carbon emission: Emission that occur from generation of purchased energy. For example emissions from use of purchased electricity. Also known as Scope 2 emission.
Examples of how we shift climate
More examples
Here are more examples of actions and products contributing to reaching our climate goal.
Electrically-powered mining equipment
Our electrically-powered drill rigs, loaders and trucks contribute to reduced climate impact in mining. For example, Sandvik DD422iE mining jumbo produces zero emissions while tramming.
Production of renewable energy
We produce renewable energy at our sites in France, Poland, Germany, the US, Zimbabwe, India and Sweden.
Fuel cell material for hydrogen cars
Our coated strip steel for fuel cell bipolar interconnect plates can be used in, for example, hydrogen cars and stationary hydrogen solutions which are clean energy sources.
Electric heating systems
Kanthal® electric heating systems reduce energy consumption and CO2 emissions in applications such as the processing of aluminium and steel.
Tube for next-generation power plants
Sanicro® 25 nickel alloy can cope with extreme heat and is critical in next-generation power plants. Efficiency goes from approximately 35 percent to >50 percent by increasing pressure and temperature, significantly reducing CO² emissions.
